Understanding tooth extraction

Extraction is our last resort, recommended only when a tooth is beyond saving: decay destroyed below the gumline, a vertical root fracture, advanced gum disease with hopeless mobility, or teeth removed as part of a planned orthodontic or denture strategy. If a root canal or crown can honestly save the tooth, we will always tell you so first — 'treat only what's needed' is house philosophy.

The procedure itself has moved a long way from its reputation. Profound local anaesthesia is verified before we begin (you'll feel pressure, never pain), and we practise atraumatic technique — periotomes and luxators that loosen the tooth gently rather than brute leverage — which preserves the surrounding bone. That preserved bone matters: it is what makes a future implant straightforward. Where an implant is planned, we can place a bone graft into the fresh socket in the same sitting, or in suitable cases the implant itself.

Healing is uneventful for the vast majority: a firm blood clot forms in the socket the first day, gum closes over in 1–2 weeks, and bone fills in over 2–3 months. Your job is protecting that clot for 72 hours — no forceful spitting, no straws, no smoking — and we send the aftercare instructions to your WhatsApp along with a next-morning check-in call.

X-ray & honest verdict

An IOPA or OPG confirms the tooth is truly unsavable and maps root shape and nearby structures. If it can be saved instead, we say so.

Anaesthesia, verified

Local anaesthetic is given and — importantly — tested before any instrument touches the tooth. Anxious patients can ask us to talk through each step, or to not.

Gentle removal

The tooth is loosened with fine periotomes and delivered with controlled movements — typically 5–15 minutes for a straightforward tooth.

Socket care

The socket is cleaned and checked; a graft or collagen plug is placed if planned; a stitch or two if needed. You bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes.

Aftercare & review
